Chris “LoJack” Carpenter

The PI says that SB% is accurate back to 1956. Since then no right handed pitcher has pitched more than 1000 innings and allowed a lower percentage of successful base stealers than Chris Carpenter.

Here are the top 20:

Great stat! Great pitchers not only don't let runners on, they make sure they get tied down to the bag. But I think Whitey Ford might be even more impressive. True, they didn't run much in his era, but he's the only pitcher in the Retrosheet era with less than 1 SB allowed per 100 IP. His CS% is excellent, with 33 caught for the 21 stolen, and 44 pickoffs! He picked off more than twice as many guys who stole successfully on him, and nearly as many as ran on him total. I believe he is the only player (and definitely the only one with more than 1,000 IP) to have more than twice as many pickoffs as stolen bases allowed. Kudos, though, also go to Buehrle, Mulholland and Knowles for their numbers. And Kenny Rogers and Brian Anderson deserve some credit, too.

I didn't know that about Ford, thanks. Of course, he and all those other guys you mentioned are LHP.

People (Yankee broadcasters) always make a huge deal about Pettitte, but he's actually not that hard to run on. Yes, he has a lot of pickoffs, but those he doesn't pick off are much more successful stealing against him than against Buehrle, Rogers, and some other contemporary southpaws.
