Omar Vizquel’s New Position

Posted by Raphy on May 29, 2011

Today's Big League Stew makes note of that fact that on Saturday, in the 2874th game of his career, Omar Vizquel played first base for the first time.  This brings to mind a thread from last season in which it was  noted  that in 2009, Vizquel played 3rd base for the first time in his 2683rd career game.

Click here to see what other players our reader's discovered as having played a new position after a substantial career.

  1. John Autin Says:

Given Andy's earlier observation (as well as Juan Pierre's performance), it seems like LF could be an appropriate next stop for ageless Omar.

After all, Vizquel's .654 OPS this year is a little better than Pierre's .639. (And I notice that we didn't hear from Timmy when Pierre went 0 for 6 Saturday....)

  2. Nash Bruce Says:

(Although, I would guess, that Juan Pierre, would be more valuable, in the OF, over a whole season, than Vizquel at 1B.) 🙂

  3. Matthew Glidden Says:

Good for Omar! Happy to see him carry on.

Jim Fregosi, since I didn't see him on the other list, tried every position on the infield, but didn't play 2B until his final season for Pittsburgh, right around career game 1,900.

  4. Jeff Wise Says:

Omar Vizquel is ageless! Very valuable player to have on any team.

I still have an autographed ball from him when he started with the Mariners.

  5. Rich Says:

Omar is actually worth less than a replacement player at this point

  6. Jimbo Says:

After a very hot start, Omar has cooled off considerably.

I'd love to see him somehow get to 3000 hits. Would be amazing to see such a strange player in that club and see how the HOF voters react.
