Liriano’s second no-hitter this year?

Posted by Andy on June 12, 2011

I see that Francisco Liriano has yet to allow a hit through 7 innings today. He could become the first pitcher to get 2 regular-season no-hitters in the game season in a long time.

Just as I was making this table, the announcers on the TBS broadcast gave the same information, so I guess I'll credit them. Also, of course Halladay had 2 such games last year but one was in the playoffs (not that this is any less impressive!)

The Twins' half of the 7th would have been a lot shorter had Revere's strikeout not come on a wild pitch. That WP let 5 more men come to the plate.

  2. John Autin Says:

Andy -- You jinxed it! (... after I did.)

BTW, Virgil Trucks is still alive, age 94. Maybe he put the hex on Liriano? -- didn't want to lose the distinction of having 2 no-hitters account for 40% of a season's wins. Liriano is 3-6 before today; Trucks went 5-19 in '52.

Should the Twins have made outs in their half of the inning more quickly so as not to take Liriano out of his pitching rhythm?

    Just kiddin' folks.

But he did have to sit on the bench a long time and think about his situation.

johnny vander meer: the one man in baseball sure never to have his record broken

  5. Shazbot Says:

I'd wager Cy's career CG record would be more unbreakable than three consecutive no-hitters.

  6. Joe Garrison Says:

Trucks could have used a little more run support, no? Even his no-hitters were squeakers. Both were One to Nothing games!

  7. Richard Chester Says:

In Trucks' second no-hitter in the 3rd inning Rizzuto hit a ground ball to SS Johnny Pesky which he did not handle cleanly and Rizzuto beat the throw to first. Score-keeper John Drebinger originally ruled it a hit but at the urging of other sports- writers changed it to an error enabling Trucks to get his no-hitter.

it's number two in my book, followed right by johnson's shutouts. interestingly cy is also the holder of the record for most consecutive hitless innings, at 25.1, which is nearly 3 games worth (and includes his perfect game)

  9. Frank Clingenpeel Says:

As far as the second of Vander Meers no-no went, Deacon McKechnie had the bullpen active a couple of times during the game because he was so blasted wild. I never heard a manager being booed like that. As an Impressionable experiencing my first {ever} pro baseball game, I was shocked at how the grown-ups were acting until my uncle told me what was really happening.

  10. Voomo Zanzibar Says:

Ryan and VanderMeer both had seasons where they led the league in both walks and strikeouts. Ryan did this six times, including the year he double no-noed.

Superchief led in KOs twice, and walks once.

Trcuks played on a 50-104 team, and his record in games in which he did Not pitch a no-hitter was 3-19! And one of those wins was a one-hitter.
In his five wins he pitched 43.2 innings, gave up 9 hits and one earned run.

@Jim: Someone could do it on three days' rest 🙂

@9, Frank -- Were you in the stands at the 2nd JVM no-hitter???

Yes, that was my first time ever at Crosley; and I probably watched at least three or four hundred games there before they moved to Riverfront in '69 -- including one game each in the '39 and '61 Series. My dad sold programs for the Reds one year during the War. Yet, I never saw the only family member who ever pitched in the bigs -- a cousin of my father's from Oklahoma whoi pitched in the American League for a couple of years.

I miss Crosley, though; I was probably ten before I knew that big league outfileds were'nt supposed to slope uphill around the warning tracks.

  15. Frank Clingenpeel Says:

Also, it was right around then that I saw the one record that I sincerely doubt WILL ever be broken, and it wasn't even on the field.

Watching the Redlegs clowning around, I saw Ernie Lombardi hold up either six or seven baseballs -- in ONE HAND!

  16. Johnny Twisto Says:

If it was six, Johnny Bench did break it.
