   The guys at the top are there because they played so many more games than the average player. I wonder which players had the highest percentage of these games in their careers? I'd be willing to bet that Brandon Inge is high up that list.

   Only the best of the best are able to stay off this list - guys like Musial, Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx, and, yes, Bonds.

   Weird that Dave Winfield blows everyone out of the water with RBI, especially since he's not even on the top with SF. Guess that would be a ton of RBI groundouts? No surprise to see Pudge Rodriguez leading in GIDP, though.

   OK, so the list shows most of the greats had lots of bad days. In a game where "successful" hitters make outs 70 percent of the time, more or less, this list has no surprises for me. I'm missing the point here. The most productive hitters (defined by their RBI total) are power hitters who hit more sacrifice flies - no surprise there, either. Oh, I just noticed that Sammy Sosa is the strikeout leader on this list. Now I see the value in this kind of research. . . . .

   One reason Jeter doesn't appear on this list (besides the obvious fact that he's been a good and consistent hitter) is that -- because of the era he's played in, the quality of his lineups and his spot in the order -- his games of 4+ PAs are more likely to be games of 5+ PAs than is the case with most hitters.

   If you search for games with 5+ PAs and no hits or walks in that same time span, he comes up 19th with 95. (Johnny Damon is 5th with 115, and Luis Aparicio stands way out front with 143.)

   Then again, does that really show anything about Jeter? He has more games of 5+ PAs than any other hitter since at least 1991 (1,334), so those 95 games with no times on base is only 7% of his total.

   Sosa with 596 Ks & Fox with 50 Ks.

    Kudos to Dave Winfield for 51 RBI's in such games.
    Not a surprise to see Craig Biggio leads the list in HBP's.
    Also, check out Sammy Sosa's strikeout numbers.

    Change the parameters to AB<=3, BB=0 and H=0 and the leader (by a wide margin) is Lenny Harris, with 884 matching games and an even 1000 AB.

    Can't make much sense of this list.

    Is it a good thing that Jeter isn't on it? It still doesn't make him a good leadoff hitter for the Yankees at this point in his career.

    The reason Jeter isn't on here, as well as the other guys mentioned in posts 4, 8, 11, and 17, is because it's guys who had longevity and were not .300 hitters. I know there are a few 300 guys there, but for the most part there are power bats and light hitting guys who didn't walk much.

    As with many posts around here, this list isn't necessarily meaningful - but (as always!) it's a fascinating thing to discuss. There's a lot of statistically wonky stuff going on here.

    And @ 6, the old canard about the best players making out 70% of the time is wrong - why do people who say that simply ignore walks? It should be around 60%, which is a huge difference.

    Jeff, although this will hardly be the last word on the question you raised, check out late-'60s/early-'70s catcher Mike Ryan. Of the 479 games in which Ryan had three or more at-bats, he failed to get a hit in 233 of them (48.6%).
