Maybe someone can answer me this question: When the Mets played their first game after 09/11, there was a widely circulated video of a Mets player with his hat removed tearing up during "God Bless America". I don't know who it was...I always thought it might have been Jorge Velandia, but I'm not 100% sure. Can anyone identify him?

@3 Really? I always thought Mantle was given #7 after he returned from Kansas City, which according to Gamelogs was in late August.

9-11 was a great wake-up call for an America which was in slumber.
When an umpire's skull or neck gets broken by an irate player, that will be a great wake up call for those who are still stuck in the 19th century.

I found it pathetic how MLB would not let the Mets wear FDNY, NYPD and PAPD on their caps just like they did when baseball returned from 9/11. MLB totally misses just how important baseball was to us here in NYC in late September and October. Bobby V was told not to wear the caps, but he didn't care and he told the players to wear them.

Yeah, #7, apparently this was because MLB.com was not able to sell the same caps, so they didn't want to miss out on fans buying the caps they allowed the Mets to wear, with a little American flag on them. Way to cash in on 9/11, MLB.

It's really disgusting in comparison to the NFL, which basically let the players so anything they wanted with shoes and gloves despite the fact that they are normally the strictest league in terms of uniform code.

@Spindle-if it was the first game in NYC after 9/11 (Sept. 21 against the Braves), it was Piazza who was crying-which only made his HR later that game that much more dramatic.

simarc and Andy, @7-9. It's all about controlling the product, licensing agreements and fees, etc etc. Think of how much smarter it would have been to let Mets and Yankees, the Nats, Phillies and Pirates wear them if they liked, then have the caps auctioned off for charity. Good cause, good publicity. Just not MLB's way.
