Ganging Up – Part 1

Posted by Raphy on June 1, 2009

I was playing around with  the new HR page and I thought that it might be fun to look at  some of the most prolific  home run teammates and see how many times  each pair homered in the same inning. Today we look at the guys who set the standard.

Ruth and Gehrig

Lou Gehrig joined the Yankees in 1923 and began to play regularly in 1925. Ruth was then in his 6th season for the Yankees and for the next 10 years (1925-1934) the tandem dominated the league, combining for  858  homeruns. Ruth hit 511 during that time and Gehrig 347 .

In the first game of the double header on September 10, 1925 Ruth and Gehrig hit back to back home runs for the first time. It would be the first of 14 15 19 times that the duo would homer in the same inning, almost all of them back to back. (Gehrig batted fifth on July 20, 1930 and the information is incomplete for some of the other games.) In 1927 alone the pair hit home runs in the same inning in 5 different games including on separate occasions vs. Rube Walberg. Here are the Ruth home runs that were hit in the same inning as a Gehrig homer.
