Inherited runners for closers

Posted by Andy on July 1, 2009

Let's check out inherited runner data for closers.

If you go to Mariano Rivera's detailed pitching page and head down about halfway, you can see his Inherited Runners (IR) and Inherited Runners Scoring (IS) stats under the "Reliever Pitching" heading.

In his career, Rivera has inherited 308 runners and allowed 90 (29%) to score. That's 308 runners in 881 games as a reliever (0.349 per game).

At first, I expected Trevor Hoffman to have many fewer inherited runners since he's been used exclusively in the 9th more than Rivera. But he's actually inherited about the same number--337 runners in 953 reliever games, or 0.353 per game. Hoffman allowed 68 (20%) to score.

Closers these days, though, inherit many fewer runners than they used to. Managers used to be much more willing to bring closers in during the 7th or 8th inning when the game was at a critical point. Among pitcher to register 30+ saves in a season, here are the highest totals for inherited runners:

Note there isn't a single season here from the modern offensive explosion (1993-present) although a few guys sneak on there from 1989 (Mark Davis, Jeff Russell, and Mitch Williams.) If you check out the full list you'll see that the first post-1993 season is from Danny Graves in 2000.

Doing the same search but limiting it to 1993-2009, here are the leaders:

It's pretty unusual for closers to inherit runners these days. Unless Rivera starts getting used differently, I think he'll pass Hoffman in inherited runners pretty soon. I'm not sure how far back the Inherited Runners stat goes, but it's not that far. I don't think we can find data here for older players like Gossage or Fingers.

Hey, who the heck is #13 Brian Shouse? It says he's been active since 1993 and I couldn't believe I hadn't heard of him. Turns out he was out of the big leagues for 4 years TWICE early in his career. Whoa.

You've never heard of Brian Shouse?

He has some crazy stats, if you dig into his career.

Just last year, he got 2 wins by only pitching 1 pitch.

There is inherited runner data for as far back as we have play-by-play records, to '54.

I could have sworn Shouse was the sidewinding lefty who Texas brought in to face Paul O'Neill in a couple big spots in the '98 postseason, giving up hits both times. But Shouse wasn't on Texas back then. Turns out I was thinking of Mike Venafro. It was actually the '99 series. And O'Neill only got a hit the second time; in game 1 he reached on an error (but a run did score).

    My memory surrounds the truth....

I think you're thinking of Shuey, perhaps.

  5. JohnnyTwisto Says:

No, after checking the game logs, I'm almost certain it was Venafro. Definitely remembered a lefty specialist coming in to neutralize O'Neill, and failing. Shuey was righty. It's just odd because I can remember seeing Shouse pitch in the past few years and thinking to myself how he failed against O'Neill, when it wasn't even him. I wonder when I turned Venafro into Shouse in my mind.

  6. Andy Says:

No, I'm pretty sure you were thinking of Shuey.

    (heh)

One time when a closer may inherit runners is when the team is ahead by a large margin in the ninth, but the opposing team starts to catch up. The team then may bring in the closer, and quite likely there are runners on base (unless, of course, the most recent blow was a homer).
