  • The use of the Play Index by baseball journalists is becoming quite prevalent. Here's an example by Peter Abraham of the Journal News.

That's great that journalists are relying on the PI, and it sort of takes me back to a couple of years ago when I was wishing for something similar online.

See, I had this handheld baseball calculator (?) in the late 80's or early 90's, where you could type in any number of variables and get strange results. There were no game, event or streak finders - it was all for single seasons, blocks of seasons or entire careers - but if I remember correctly you could incorporate age, height, weight, year of birth or year of death and even subtract, divide or add totals to each other (ie., there was no official total bases stat on there, but you could say: "most H+2B+(3B*2)+(HR*3) year" and come up with the top 50 seasons).

Anyway, does anyone else remember this thing or know what it was called? When the PI came along, I scrapped my ideas to try and track it down, but I'd still like to find it somehow for nostalgia purposes.
