One amazing thing is that Howard's played in just 138 games so far, missing 18 games to this point. If he'd played those 18 and struck out at the same rate, he'd have 220 K's already!

As it stands, unless something unusual happens, he's going to finish with over 200. Of course, with 42 HR and 125 RBI, it's manageable. But it's not quite as impressive as getting 200 walks in a season.

I was researching this early actually, in light of Howard's steady pursuit of the record. Most of these seasons aren't awful, in fact a lot of them are pretty good, except for the ones from Jose Hernandez.

Jack Cust is also having in interesting year w/r/t K's. He's got over 150 right now in less than 500 plate appearances, and under 400 official AB's.

  2. Andy Says:

Neat point. If Cust strikes out 3 more times in 21 or fewer ABs, he'll get the record for most Ks in 400 or fewer ABs:

Who holds the record now? I'll give you a clue---Bo knows strikeouts.

  3. vonhayes Says:

Bo had 106 K in 284 AB in 1993. Jay Buhner had some gross looking years in there too.

    Oh hey, Deron Johnson again.

  4. Andy Says:

Yeah, I've singled-handedly increased Deron Johnson's fame significantly.

One more interesting discovery from Ryan Howard's SO record this year and Adam Dunn's SO record in 2004, and we will know how exaggerated Howard's record is. In 2004, Adam Dunn had 123 games with at least 1K over his 162 games. No game is with 4K, and 11 games are with 3K. This year, Ryan Howard has 105 games with at least 1K, but 4 games are with 4K. In addition, his 3K-games are 19. But 19 3K-games are not the highest record this year. Dan Uggla has 21 3K-games this year. I'm not sure whether Dan Uggla's 21 3K-games record is the record in a single season in MLB history, but it's funny.

cchien- Howard's 19 3K games are the most in the majors this year and tied with Preston Wilson 2000 for the most since '57. Uggla has 12 3K games:

Bonds still holds the record for most Ks by a lead off hitter. In 1970 he had 184 Ks at the lead off spot. Wowza.
