Forgotten Buzzards

Posted by Steve Lombardi on January 9, 2010

The Yankees Alfredo Aceves went 10-1 this season, working mostly out of the bullpen. Being curious as to how many pitchers, since 1901, had seasons like this, I used Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Pitching Season Finder and asked it to show me all seasons where a pitcher had GS<=3, W>=10 and L<=3. And, here's that list:

So, it's only happened 40 times. Anyone into baseball history would not be shocked to see Roy Face, Ron Perranoski, Hoyt Wilhelm, Ron Davis and Phil Regan on this list. But, what about Eddie Yuhas, Joe Beggs, Ed Roebuck, Dick Hyde, and Ted Wilks? How many people remember those old buzzards? (Well, maybe some old Dodger fans remember Ed Roebuck?) Then, again, in 50 or 60 years, will anyone remember Alfredo Aceves?

Mike Henneman is the only guy to do it more than once.

  2. jksesq1 Says:

Henneman's stats perplex me. How does a reliever run up a 57-42 record playing with mostly mediocre teams? (He was 57-34 in 8 years with Detroit).

  3. DavidRF Says:

Does baseball-reference have reliever splits based on the entering game situation? Some of these guys were vultures (Face had 4W and 1L in his 9 blown saves) but in other cases the reliever is a mop up guy who mainly enters the game when the team is trailing (hard to get an L that way). Aceves picked up a few wins from starters who failed to go 5 IP.

  4. DoubleDiamond Says:

One baseball stat I never see listed anywhere, and yet you'd think it would be an interesting one to put somewhere, is most wins without a loss in a season (regardless of whether as a starter or a reliever). I do recall seeing once that it was Tom Zachary, the same guy who gave up Babe Ruth's 60th home run in 1927 as a member of the Washington Senators. Of course, I was excited to hear that this record was held by a Senator, only to read further that he was actually a Yankee when he had that season. I see here on Baseball Reference that he did indeed go 12-0 for the Yankees in 1929. He started only 11 games that year, so at least one of the wins was in relief. Dennis Lamp's 11-0 falls one game short of this.

Conversely, I've never seen the stat of most losses without a win in a season listed anywhere. I just checked Anthony Young's page and saw that during his horrible 1993 season that was part of a two-season 27-loss streak, he still managed to go 1-16. Any other possibilities?

  5. JohnnyTwisto Says:

Zachary does have the record for most wins w/o a loss.

Terry Felton went 0-13 for the '82 Twins, for the opposite record.

I remember fondly the 84 Aurelio Lopez season. He and Willie Hernandez were quite the tandem.
