I'm surprised how tall most of these guys are, actually. Nearly half of them are at least 6 feet, whereas I suspected that triples hitter would be, on average, shorter. Also, if you look at the 24 shortest guys to get 100 triples (Richie Ashburn at #60 through Rabbit Maranville at #83), Timmy Raines is the only one to play as recently as the 1970s and one of just a handful to play after the 1930s.

As we've talked about on recent posts, this weight data isn't necessarily all that accurate, but the players are also heavier on average than I would have expected.
I think that the reason for both the heights and weights being more than I expected is pretty simple: in bygone eras of baseball, hitting triples was more about hitting for distance than it was about running speed. In the large ballparks back then, if you a hit a ball far enough, you could run to third base while the outfield was retrieving the ball. Today, with much smaller ballparks, triples almost necessitate both weird caroms and fast runners. I would guess that if I looked at seasons with 10 triples now as compared to 50 or 70 years ago, such players are shorter and lighter on average today.

OK, so this is another reason why Ruth can be considered the best all-around athlete of the 20th century.
I must ask though, what are the weights of players based on? An average of all their seasons? Their last season? Some random season? Heights don't change much, but weight can change over 10 or 20 years.

I don't know for sure, but I bet it is essentially what the media guides typically say. It probably varies player to player, in terms of whether they are updated year to year, whether they are accurate, etc.
