10+ strikeouts in first career game

Posted by Andy on April 7, 2010

With a lot of pitchers slated to make major-league debuts in the next few days, I thought I'd look up all the guys to post at least 10 strikeouts in their first game. (As always this covers 1920-1939 and 1952-present.)

That was a great game by Matsuzaka ... alas, that was probably the last time he walked fewer than 6 guys.

Some very good pitchers on this list, all things told.

  2. Andy Says:

I wrote a post recently but never published it about how Matsuzaka is the worst free-agent signing of all time. He cost the Red Sox $100 million in cash (posting fee + salary) plus a bunch of other millions in contract perks. His inability to go deep into games really hurts the team by having to pull a lot more innings out of the bullpen, who are lesser pitchers to start with and also have to be used too much.

  3. Johnny Twisto Says:

Worst of all time? I can't see that at all. He certainly hasn't performed up to expectations, but he's been alright and still has time to add value. There are probably also benefits to his signing which are not directly related to his performance (marketing in Japan, signing Okajima).
