And, now, see how many times batters have 6+ games since 1988 with a SH while batting clean-up:

  1. Vidor Says:

Frank Thomas (the Big Hurt edition) had 10,074 plate appearances and zero sac bunts. I think that's a record.

  2. Mark Says:

    Hank Aaron with 13!? LOL

  3. Mark Says:

I should add Hank would go 12 years without a SH so it makes sense most of those 13 SH hits were at the start of his career.

  4. Gerry Says:

Yes Thomas broke the record formerly belonging to Killebrew, 9831 PA without an SH. Vlad Guerrero is the active leader, at 8065.

  5. Chuck Says:

A few guys did it at least twice in at least one of their games: Fairly, Hank Thompson, Campanella, Bochte, Pafko were just a few I saw in a quick scan.

Gorman Thomas? Gorman FREAKING Thomas?! With five sacs the year he led the league with 45 home runs? Incroyable. Well, I guess when you also strike out 175 times and you're in a situation in which you need contact ...

  6. Mike Says:

In the Harvey Haddux (1959) game Eddie Mathews sacraficed Felxi Mantilla to 2nd base in the 13th, where he eventually scored the winning run from, in the same year he led the majors in HR.

  7. Frank Clingenpeel Says:

As much as I watched Vada Pinson, I can NEVER recall him bunting. I know he usually batted third instead of fourth; but that memory makes me wonder if it is only his place in the order that kept Pinson off.

And, by the way, Pinson is another of my "Get the Veterans Committee off their duffs, and vote him in" list, along with Schumacher, Stevenson and Mullane.

  8. JDV Says:

Count up the number of such games recorded by a Dodger (Fairly / Robinson, J. / Garvey / Davis, T. / Campanella / Hodges / Lefebvre / Furillo / Snider / Cey. It looks like Durocher / Alston / Lasorda had something to do with this philosophy. I've always liked it. If a team can manufacture a run every inning, how many games do you think they'd lose when scoring 9+? Teams get too caught up in what a #3 or #4 guy is supposed to do, rather than how best to put a run on the board in the given situation. Pitching staffs are mis-managed the same way. They bring in the 'situational specialist' because they create these fictitious titles and then pay homage to them.
