Ryan Zimmerman’s multi-homer games and walk-off wins

Posted by Andy on July 7, 2010

Last night, Ryan Zimmeran had two homers, the second of which was a walk-off game-winning homer. Click through for some details on Zimmeran's feats.

He now has 8 career multi-homer games, with a shocking half of them coming in just 2010:

That means he's got as many multi-HR games in the last 60 or so games as he had in the 600-some he played before that.

Note, too, that last night's performance had the highest WPA value. A walk-off job will do that for you.

This was Zimmerman's second game-winning plate appearance in less than a week. On July 1, he had a game-winning sacrifice fly against the Mets.

Here are the rest of Zimmerman's go-ahead plate appearances that ended games:

You may not be able to tell too much difference from the standings, but one BIG reason his walk-off totals are higher this year is that Washington is actually still in the game in the ninth inning a lot more this year. If you see the Nats making the playoffs by 2012 {a la Tampa Bay}, remember that you saw it beginning to come together this year

  2. Thomas Says:

I've been a Zimmerman fan since I went down to DC and saw them play a few games his rookie year. He's a beast, and if he were playing for a big market team or in a playoff race, everyone would know about this guy.

  3. Djibouti Says:

Assuming Joey Votto wins the final man fan vote, does Zimmerman take over as lead snub for the all star game?

    A couple things of note:

-Zimmerman's walk-off HR against Wang in 2006 came the day after he drove in the go ahead run with 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th against Mariano Rivera.

-Zimmerman's walk-off HR against Julio in 2007 came at 2:00 a.m. in front of a crowd of around 75 people after two rain delays and an announced cancellation. At the time he hit it, there were more people in the upper deck at RFK cleaning the stadium than there were in the lower deck watching the game.

  6. DoubleDiamond Says:

I see that Peter Moylan was one of the opposing pitchers. I learned the phrase LOOGY from this blog, and now I'm going to make an obvious variation of it - ROOGY. Moylan was brought into last night's Braves-Phillies game in a ROOGY role. He faced one righthanded batter in the 7th after the starter was removed, and then with some lefthanded batters coming up, he got removed after getting that one out.
