Buster Posey extends his hitting streak to 21 games

Buster Posey of the Giants has the longest active hit-streak in the majors at 21 games and is closing in on the longest streak of the season:

Technically, Clark only holds the San Francisco Giants record.

Jorge Cantu - a 17 game hitting streak and an OBP of .338 during the streak. OUCH!

I guessed Jack Clark, and I'm neither a liar nor a Giants fan. I was a baseball fan in 1978 and his streak was long enough that it was starting to make the front page of sports pages throughout the country. There's an aura surrounding these hitting streaks that is hard to convey to those not old enough to remember Rose's or Molitor's streaks. The amount of press attention is about the same as if a guy is threatening the single season home run record, except it starts long, long before he ever gets close to 56 games.

Michael--interesting. Maybe the Steroids Era has spoiled that to some extent since hitting streaks of 25 games are not that rare in recent years. I personally don't really notice until it gets to 30. If the trend this year of less offense continues, a 25-gamer would perhaps get more recognition.

I'll tell you something, though. I went ahead and visited his web site. I think he's genuinely trying to write a good blog (although the truth is that it's not great) and I think he tried to make some short, valuable comments here to get some traffic over to his blog. I'm not saying I loved what he did, just that I think he's legitimately trying to get an audience. He's just going to have to try some different things.

How about a different kind of streak for a different rookie this year? Danny Valencia of the Twins had a streak earlier this week of four straight games with 3+ hits (14 H in 19 AB). From my crude understanding of how to use the PI, this may have tied a major league record, and may be a ML record for rookies.

The record for most consecutive games with 3 or more hits is 6, set by Sam Thompson in June of 1895, tied by Jimmy Johnston in June of 1923 and by George Brett in May of 1976. I don't know what the rookie record is.
