FaceBook Like Buttons on Player and Team Pages

Posted by Sean Forman on August 3, 2010

You can now admit to friends and family you "like" Lenn Sakata or the 1991 Detroit Tigers. Admittedly this is a frivolous little thing to add, but I hope this will expose more people to Baseball-Reference.com. We have these buttons on all major and minor leaguers, and on major league team pages. As best I can tell, Willie Mays is in the early lead with 18 "likes".

That's actually pretty cool. No longer do I have to hunt through random people to locate my favorite players of all time.

Also, as an aside, that is the second Lenn Sakata reference I've seen in the past week.

  2. Adam Darowski Says:

It is with great pleasure that I was the first person to Like the heck out of Pete Incaviglia's page.

When you make announcements like this, could you please give us some guidance on how to use the feature?
I love all the new features, but on this one I can't figure out where the "Like" button is...and the post the other day about team salary info, it must have taken me 15 minutes to figure out how to drill down to the right page.

  4. Brett Says:

I'm working late, hopefully I can still be one of the first 10 to "Like" Tettleton.

  5. djl Says:

    I "like" this.

It'd be cool to see this expand to the other sports-reference sites...I immediately (and unsuccessfully) tried to like the '64 Buffalo Bills and Nate Thurmond.

  6. Jay Rock Says:

Mildly frivolous, but wicked cool nonetheless!

  7. Grey Says:

Nice, Sean. I'm looking at adding this to a site I run — I notice you went with the FBML version instead of the iFrame. The like button appears to show and (and function) just using the fb-root tag and what surrounds it, without adding all that meta tag stuff, so I'm a little confused about what adding that's supposed to be accomplishing.

Even more surprising: Nobody likes the '88 Mets yet. C'mon.

  8. Billy Says:

@sfduke76, agreed I could not figure out how to like either. dammit I want to be the first to like Jeff Manto!

  9. MrNoxt Says:

@billy and @sfduke76: I was not able to see the "like" buttons using my Explorer browser. I was tipped to try using the Google Chrome browser, and viola! the "like" buttons appear beneath the ride-hand ad along the bio bar. Funny they don't seem to show with Explorer.

  10. Mr. Dave Says:

Hmm....that explains things. Is this just a random bug, or something with Explorer? I have no desire to try a new web browser (I have a hard enough time finding things on the one I have now).

  11. Sean Forman Says:

Guys running IE. I apologize for not testing this on IE. It was working on chrome and firefox and I assumed was working on the others as well. I've fixed it (at least for me, it's working on IE) and the like buttons will appear just below the first square ad on the rhs of the page and then under the top content of the team pages.

This should happen for the active teams and players later this morning and then everyone else sometime later today.

    It's working for me. Thanks!
