ALDS Game One SP All Left

Posted by Steve Lombardi on October 4, 2010

By most accounts, it will be the Yankees' CC Sabathia against the Twins' Francisco Liriano in Game 1 of one ALDS this year. And, it will be the Rays' David Price opposing the Rangers' Cliff Lee in their opener of the other ALDS series this post-season.

Can anyone remember another time since 1995 where we had four lefty aces all lined-up to start a LDS series in one league?

Unless I'm missing something, it's never happened before....

The only LCS to feature 4 LH Game 1 starters was 1977.

  2. Jeff Wise Says:

Should make for some great baseball to watch!

David Price has a 1.70 ERA versus left-handed hitters this season and Josh Hamilton hits .271 versus left-handed pitchers while hitting .401 versus right-handed pitchers. Very much looking forward to that match up.

  3. Leatherman Says:

The Rick Ankiel 5 wild pitch game is in there. I could have sworn that the Braves won that game, but Maddux gave up 6 runs in the first inning before Ankiel imploded in the third. And yet somehow, that is only the 5th worst game on the list above (in terms of game score).

  4. Thomas Says:

Speaking of that Ankiel game, why does every player change in the box score (pinch hitters/substitutions) show up three times each?

  5. DoubleDiamond Says:

And now Ankiel is with the Braves as an outfielder!

Along the same lines, all four teams that made it to the postseason in the last year of the old setup, 1993, had a catcher who wore #10. I thought I had remembered that on all four teams, the catcher who wore #10 was the first string catcher, but this was only true for the two teams that made it into the World Series.

Chicago White Sox - Mike LaValliere (backup to Ron Karkovice)
Atlanta Braves - Greg Olson (backup to Damon Berryhill)

Both LaValliere and Olson made four plate appearances spread over two games in their respective League Championship Series. Both series went six games (out of a possible seven).

    Philadelphia Phillies - Darren Daulton
Toronto Blue Jays - Pat Borders

Also, Olson, Daulton, and Borders all have last names that are pronounced, but not necessarily spelled, the same as bookstore chains. Olsson's Books & Records was a small chain that operated in the Washington, DC, area from 1972-2008. B. Dalton and Borders are reasonably well-known national chains in the U.S., although I don't know the current status of B. Dalton. All of the stores I knew of in the Philadelphia area have closed. Is or was there ever a LaValliere's Bookstore anywhere? After that postseason, I decided that if I ever ran a bookstore, I'd call it LaValliere's. But that's too hard to spell and pronounce, so I'd probably really call it Spanky's (after LaValliere's nickname). And now bookstores are going the way of scheduled doubleheaders, so there won't be a LaVlliere's or Spanky's run by me.

  6. Raker Says:

I'm a big David Price fan but I'm rooting for Hamilton to show the Rays what they gave away for free. That would be poetic justice. Imagine that? The possible MVP and CYY are both 1st picks in the draft by the Rays.

  7. Johnny Twisto Says:

Hey, the Rays got $50,000 for Hamilton.

It's hard to blame them for letting him go. The guy was a mess and they were loaded with young outfielders at the time. Respect due to Hamilton for becoming what everyone hoped he could, but there's no guarantee it would have happened if he stayed in Tampa.
