Fewest RBI with a .300+ BA and 30+ HR

Posted by Raphy on November 2, 2008

Here are the players with less than 85 RBI in a season in which they hit over .300 with at least 30 homeruns.

Looks like a record for Hanley Ramirez.

  1. statboy Says:

At the opposite end of the spectrum is Vern Stephens in 1950. He had fewer HRs, a lower BA, but *77* more RBIs than Ramirez.

  2. whiz Says:

Regarding McGwire, he had a lot of injuries and got his 73 RBI in only 89 games. And Mitchell's was in a strike year. Projected to a full season, they both get 120+ RBI. Bonds in 1994 projects to 100+. Too bad PI doesn't do ratios, as Ramirez likely would have the lowest RBI/PA for a full-time player with those stats (less than 0.100).

In terms of RBI/HR, Bonds in 2001 had only 1.88, lower than any player on this list, and I think the lowest for any player with at least 20 HR. A list of players with 20 or more HR and RBI/HR less than or equal to 2.00 for a season (you can't get this directly from PI, but you can by scanning lists of players with a certain number of HR):

    RBI HR Ratio
    Bonds 2001 137 73 1.88
    Maas 1990 41 21 1.95
    Duncan 2006 43 22 1.95
    Bonds 2003 90 45 2.00
    Deer 1992 64 32 2.00
    Hoiles 1992 40 20 2.00

Ramirez with 2.03 this year I believe is next on the list.

OK, the formatting above didn't work, but hopefully you can read it.

    whiz -
If you count players who split time in different leagues as having different seasons you can add McGwire with STL in 97 (42-24-1.75) and Ron Gant with Phili in 2000 (38-20-1.9) to your list.

Prior to this season the record for lowest rbi/pa among 30+ hr, .300+ ba was Alou's '66 at .104.
