   Honestly, I don't know if the Yanks can afford to keep him at SS until this contract is up. I mean, I could see him switching to DH in a year or two (when Jorge retires, more than likely). That could have catch Aparicio on this list (if he plays virtually every game for two years at SS), but would leave him well short of Vizquel on the overall leaderboard. We'll just have to wait and see, I guess.

   The White Sox seem to have more than their fair share of representatives on this list (Aparicio, Appling, Guillen, Dent, Smalley, Vizquel, Carrasquel, not to mention former manager Fregosi and coach Brinkman) 9 out of 37...that would work out to a .243 clip.

   I held my breath while waiting for the rest of this to load, hoping Ripken would be ahead of the guy in whose honor, I'm guessing, this was put here. And he is, but only by about a month's worth of games. Too bad; Ripken will probably fall to third by Mother's Day 2011. And that other guy leads him by wide margins in plate appearances. I guess that's the risk Ripken had to take by being worthy of batting third instead of second in the order.

   I don't begrudge Aparicio, the starting shortstop on the Orioles' first World Series championship team in 1966, a year in which he led the AL in both plate appearances and at-bats, his first place ranking here.

   Interesting to see Jeter's and Ripken's numbers side by side - at least Cal's SS numbers. Jeter favors well, higher OPS. . .

   It's not the names at the top of the list I find interesting. It's the ones a little further down. Dick Schofield, 29th? Eddie Brinkman, 11th? Brinkman was a great glove man, but somehow I'd think there'd be more players on the list in front of him.

   Reminds me of how Bill James came about with the idea to create the Historical Baseball Abstract. Sitting with a friend, watching Mike MacFarlane play, he wondered if MacFarlane is one of the 100 greatest catchers ever. His friend insisted he wasn't, because it seemed wrong to think MacFarlane could be one of the "greatest" anything. Yet, of course, he was.

   @3 DaHook,

   Don't forget Ron Hansen - he actually had significant playing time with the ChiSox in the late 60's. Could probably replace Smalley on your list.

   With all of the talk lately about other Reds shortstops -- specifically Concepcion {as a possible HOF candidate} and Larkin {close to a sure thing}, I am surprised that Chico Cardenas never got more Hall attention. He starred in both leagues, held his own as a hitter {would you trade him for Edd Brinkman???} and generally made every team he played for -- especially the Reds and Twins --that much better.

   Notice how Cal Ripken and A-Rod match up in home runs while playing shortstop.
