Biographical Information[edit]

Ormond Butler managed in the majors one year, was a major league umpire and also played baseball professionally. However, he was most famous for his work in the theater.

Butler's obituary in the New York Times issue of September 15, 1915, indicates that he "was widely known for years in the theatrical profession". The article stated he had played professional baseball (but didn't specify where) and also managed at Pittsburgh and Columbus. He began his theatrical career at the Ford's Opera House in Baltimore, MD and later managed a team of German comedians and Buffalo Bill Cody as well as being business manager of the New York Opera Company. He died "in a sanitarium in Baltimore, from paralysis, in his sixty-first year".

As an umpire, he worked in the American Association in 1883 and 1886.

He is listed as being born in West Virginia in 1854, although that state was not created until the Civil War.
