Ubaldo Jimenez has put together a solid major-league career so far and last night he pitched the first no-hitter in Rockies franchise history.

Here are the complete-game no-hitters within the box score range covered by the PI ranked by most pitches:

Jimenez comes in at 10th, thanks to his 6 walks. If you look at this list, there is a small tendency for no-hitters with more walks or more strikeouts to have more overall pitches, which makes sense. Also there tend to be few GIDPs.

Because of his 6 walks with only 7 strikeouts, Jimenez got a fairly low game-score for a no-hitter. Of the 141 no-hitters that show up in this PI search, Jimenez's is one of only 28 to have a game score of 88 or lower.

In any event, a no-hitter is a no-hitter and this was a great moment for the Rockies franchise.

Surprised A.J. Burnett isn't higher up. Didn't he set the record for most walks in a no-hitter?

Memo to Andy and Craig Calcaterra: This particular Hispanic surname has two e's and one i, not two i's and one e. To help you remember how to pronounce the name, feel free to add the acute accent to the second vowel (Jiménez — khee-MEH-ness).

I've gotten a bit cranky about this error because it's being made repeatedly by people whom I respect and who make it a point to avoid errors in their blogs.

Not often a no-hitter gets overshadowed, but I guess when the Cards and Mets play 20 innings and Boston gets swept in a resumed-game doubleheader...

  4. Andy Says:

I have fixed the spelling. I appreciate your comment as I am usually very sensitive to such thing and hate that I screwed this up.

  5. Daniel Says:

    Chris,

    Almost:

Jim Mahoney had a ten-walk no-hitter; Burdett walked nine in his.

  6. Kahuna Tuna Says:

According to his Bullpen entry, Jim Maloney threw 187 pitches in his 10-inning no-hitter in 1965.

It's interesting that Maloney's three best seasons — 1963, 1965 and 1966 — were exactly the same as Sandy Koufax's years of brilliance. Maloney was also very good in 1964 but threw only two shutouts and went "only" 15-10.

  7. Rich Says:

Hilariously, Maloney also hit a batter in that 10 walk no hitter.
