Jackson becomes the first player since Livan Hernandez in 2005 to throw as many as 149 pitches in a game.

This has been an absolutely insane year for pitching - two, almost three, perfect games, and two other no-hitters? I think the steroid era is officially done.

Using the basic pitch count estimator at Wikipedia, Maloney comes in at 169 pitches.
Interestingly, through the end of that season, he made nine more starts after that game, going 6-3 with a 2.08 ERA.

And here I thought there was a rule against throwing a gross! Not the prettiest no-no you ever saw, but plenty good. Congrats, Edwin!

Jackson threw 70 balls and 79 strikes tonight. That's a 53% strike rate. Congratulations to him!

The Pirates lose a lot but at least they get hits in their losses.
Tampa on the other hand...no hits tonight, nothing against the A's about a month ago, and another nothing from last year.

He did pretty well for my Tigers in the first half of the season last year but then tapered off. He's got a ton of talent but sometimes seems to have problems keeping it together. I'm happy to see him make the record books.

over the past, say, 20 years, what team has been no-hit the most? i'm thinking the Rays have to be up there. Derek Lowe's no-hitter, the perfect games by Buehrle and Braden, and now this.

In the most recent 5 games when a starter throws 140 or more pitches, there have been a total of 16 walks...
If you throw out yesterday's game, the other 4 have a total of 8 walks between them. This guy had 8 walks!

This game gave Jackson exactly 777 career innings. Pretty neat.

Looking into pitch counts makes me wonder -- is there a way that we coult get them for Johnny Vander Meer's second no-no? I don't have precise data on that, but I do recall my dad telling me that Mechecnie had the bullpen up several times because of Vander Meers' wildness. He was sitting near the bullpen at Crosley that day, and used to tell us about how he kept booing the relievers that the manager would send down to warm up, just in case.

Johnny Vander Meer had 8 walks in his second no-no against Brooklyn on June 15, 1938.

Never mind -- unless somebody moved Ebbetts Field to Boston for that one game, my sister is {Being polite} "errant". I am looking at our memorabilia now -- the stub says Ebbotts Field. It also says that this was a night game -- Brooklyn's first.
