  1. Gerry Says:

The record for triples in a game is 4, done twice, but both times in the 19th century. George Strief, Philadelphia AA, 25 June 1885, and Bill Joyce, New York, 18 May 1897.

  2. Leatherman Says:

Lance Johnson's 12 total bases are the most in a game without hitting a home run.

  3. Twins trifecta: Denard Span hits three triples, ties record | Sport News Says:

[...] but only Lance Johnson (1995), Herm Winningham (’90) and Shawon Dunston (’90) have hit that many triples in a game since 1982 (h/t [...]

  4. Eric Says:

Its interesting (to me anyway) that by my quick addition, the 3-triples list totals 42 outs (of 146 PAs) but only 3 Ks.

  5. Jason W Says:

I don't remember who it was with, but I once hit three triples in a game of Strat-O-Matic with a guy who only hit two all season 🙂

  6. Andy Says:

If he hit 3 in one game, wouldn't he have to have at least 3 in the entire season? 🙂

  7. Frank Clingenpeel Says:

Is this the most triples recorded in one time Span {sorry; I'm still thinking of the Rhodes blog}?

  8. StratFan Says:

Clearly Andy has not partaked in a Strat game. Andy, you would think so, but alas, it is entirely possible for it to happen. I had Tony Gwynn hit 3 in a game with his ridiculous 1994 card.

  9. Kahuna Tuna Says:

Baseball Almanac lists the 16 following three-triple games from the pre-PI era:

    Harry Wolverton, Phil. (N) 7/13/1900
    Jimmy Sheckard, Bkn. 4/18/1901
    Elmer Flick, Clev. 7/6/1902
    Bill Bradley, Clev. 7/28/1903
    Patsy Dougherty, Bos. (A) 9/5/1903
    Mike Donlin, Cinc. 9/22/1903
    Billy Lush, Det. 9/26/1903
    Nap Lajoie, Clev. 7/13/1904
    Miller Huggins, Cinc. 10/8/1904
    Dave Brain, St.L. (N) 5/29/1905
    Dave Brain, Pitt. 8/8/1905
    Pat Moran, Bos. (N) 8/10/1905
    Hal Chase, N.Y. (A) 8/30/1906
    Chief Wilson, Pitt. 7/24/1911
    Joe Jackson, Clev. 6/30/1912
    Gus Williams, St.L. (A) 4/24/1913

Dave Brain had 11 triples overall during the 1905 season.

I had a vague impression that, back in deadball days, someone had a three-triple game every month or so. Didn’t happen that way, but once a year was about right, at least until the Great War.

Baseball Almanac also lists a second three-triple game by the Cardinals’ Jim Bottomley in a 12-3 win over the Cubs in the nightcap on 6/21/1927, but the box scores show Bottomley hitting only two triples in that game.

I’d never heard of Gus Williams. He was a lefty-hitting outfielder for second-division Browns teams from 1911 to 1915. In 1914, his second (and last) season as a regular, Williams struck out 120 times, setting a single-season record that would not be broken until 1938. Williams’ manager in 1914 and 1915 was Branch Rickey. It appears that Mr. Rickey was not impressed by Williams' strikeouts.

  10. statboy Says:

ESPN said that there have been 78 3-homer games since the last 3-triple game.

  11. redsock Says:

This Day In Baseball History (June 30) has this:

1934: Lou Gehrig has three triples at Washington. However, the game is rained out after 4 1/2 innings, depriving Gehrig of a record.

  12. Span’s Big Numbers Boost | FanGraphs Baseball Says:

[...] Denard Span‘s 4 for 4 night, which included three triples. Just minutes after the game ended Andy from the B-R blog got the ball rolling, noting that Span is just the 29th player in MLB history to hit three triples [...]

  13. Kahuna Tuna Says:

ESPN said that there have been 78 3-homer games since the last 3-triple game.

    I've been researching three- and four-homer games. I count either 77 or 80 three-homer games since April 21, 2002 — 80 if you count a four-homer game as also a three-homer game, 77 if you don't. (-;þ

  14. Gerry Says:

#2 is not right. On 25 June 1885, George Strief of Philadelphia in the (then major league) American Association had 4 triples and a double, making 14 total bases without a home run. Also, George Gore of Chicago NL had 2 triples and 3 doubles in a game on 9 July 1885, which is 12 total bases, same as Lance Johnson.

  15. Frank Clingenpeel Says:

Gerry, I believe that #2 was speaking in terms of modern {post-1900} major-league records. I just wish that Negro League totals were available enough to add to the stat base; my bet would be that someone like Cool Papa Bell or Oscar Charleston had some pretty impressive performances.

  16. tbone82 Says:

What's the record for most misplayed caroms by an outfielder in one game? Not to be negative, but I only saw the highlights on Quick Pitch the morning after, and it looked to me like all three triples were gifts courtesy of a right fielder (can't remember who) who allowed each ball to bounce right past him off the wall.
