Most Total Bases in a Cycle

Posted by Raphy on September 1, 2008

After hitting for the cycle today against the Cardinals, Stephen Drew decided to try it again. He tacked on a double to his total before the game ended, leaving him with a cycle and 12 total bases. Here are the other players since 1956  with at least that many total bases in a cycle.

Interesting that no one has ever had more than one triple in a cycle.

  2. gerry Says:

On the contrary, four people have had more than one triple in a cycle:
    Jimmy Ryan, 28 July 1888
    Larry Twitchell, 15 August 1889
    Farmer Weaver, 12 August 1890
    Hoot Evers, 7 September 1950.
Just because it hasn't happened since 1956 doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

Twitchell actually had *three* triples that day.

has anyone ever hit a double cycle in one game? 2 of each hit? if not, who has come the closest?

  4. gerry Says:

I don't think anyone has come particularly close.

Johnny Burnett had 9 hits in a game - 7 singles & 2 doubles. No one else has had as many as 8 hits in a game. A few guys have had 7, but with no home runs. On 24 June 1901, Mike Donlin had 2 singles, 2 doubles, and 2 triples. That's maybe the closest anyone has ever come.
