Most Triples Through Age 25

Posted by Raphy on September 25, 2008

On the suggestions page, kingturtle mentioned that Jose Reyes has put up some very high triples totals through the age of 25. In fact, with 71 triples through his age 25 season, Reyes is 18th all time10th since 1901, and 2nd since 1940. Reyes needs another 3 triples this season to match Carl Crawford for #1 since 1940.

Here are the leaders in triples through age 25 (seasonal age, not actual) since 1940.

I was just looking at Reyes yesterday. Since 1920, only Paul Waner (4) has more seasons of at least 17 triples. (Yes, I am slicing the numbers to make Reyes look more impressive - sue me.) Since 1920, only Goose Goslin has more triples from ages 22 through 25.

hey thanks for doing this research so quickly! there's a few interesting tidbits about that list. Crawford managed 10 more triples this season (at age 26). He and Reyes both have a chance at getting to Willie Wilson's 147, Brock's 141, or Mays' 140. Do they have enough wheels and stamina to reach Musial's 177 or Clemente's 166? Templeton only had 37 more triples over his next 10 seasons. Guzman has slowed down considerable. Callison 40 over his next 9 seasons. Griffin only 30 over his next 10 seasons. Mantle only 23 over his next 11 seasons.

Brett on the other hand had 20 triples at age 26. That was his 20 double, 20 triple, 20 homer season. (can we get a complete list posted of all the 20/20/20 guys?)

These days, you've got to get your triples early and often if you're going to reach Musial's 177.

Here's a list of post-1940 players who hit 20 or more triples in a season, age 26 or more:
*Dale Mitchell had 23 in 1949 at age 27
*Curtis Granderson had 23 at age 26
*Snuffy Stirnweiss had 22 in 1945 at age 26
*Lance Johnson had 21 in 1996 at age 32
*Jimmy Rollins had 20 in 2007 at age 27
*George Brett had 20 in 1979 at age 26
*Jeff Heath had 20 in 1941 at age 26
*Willie Mays had 20 in 1957 at age 26

And here are honorable mentions of the 35 or over crowd:
*Mickey Vernon had 14 in 1954 at age 36
*Tommy Henrich had 14 in 1948 at age 35
*Joe Kuhel had 13 in 1945 at age 39
*Jose Cruz had 13 in 1984 at age 36

*Brett Butler had 9 in 1995 at age 38
*Doc Cramer had 9 in 1944 at age 38
*Kenny Lofton had 6 in 2007 at age 40
*Luke Appling had 5 in 1949 at age 42
*Paul Molitor had 5 in 1998 at age 41

    Kingturtle: here's the
    20/20/20
list -- seven players, including Granderson and Rollins last year. Granderson is the only one to make the 23/23/23 list.
