The world is ending: David Ortiz and Adrian Gonzalez tripled in the same game

Posted by Andy on April 11, 2011

I've got nothing more to say. I'm too busy making sure my affairs are all in order.

Didn't see either of the hits and its too early for highlights.

Were they legit or badly misplayed monster balls? Could generous official scoring have been involved?

    What's next? A Sox comeback?

  2. zack Says:

    LOL Matsuzaka

  3. Backinblack Says:

Ortiz got his triple early this year. He has now hit exactly one triple in each of the last five seasons, and 9 of the last 12.

  4. Kelly Says:

I thought the same thing Andy..the Apocalypse is nigh!

  5. Neil L. Says:

Last time a DH and first baseman tripled in the same game for the same team?

  6. John Autin Says:

@5, I'm sure this is NOT the last time it happened, but anyway ... On August 10, 1977, Jim Rice (DH) and George Scott (1B) both tripled in the same inning off reliever Dyar Miller.

Actually, I just realized it can be checked pretty easily with the Play Index, and the answer is ... Less than a year ago, May 18, 2010, the Twins did it with Michael Cuddyer (1B) and Alexei Casilla (DH). Casilla actually pinch-hit for starting DH Justin Morneau, but by definition, a PH for the DH is the DH. Before that, it was done in 2007 (Billy Butler and Mark Teahen), and 3 times in 2005.

  7. John Autin Says:

This is the kind of thing that keep me wasting time looking for freak occurrences:

On July 22, 2004, David Ortiz tripled in consecutive ABs in Fenway against Baltimore's Rodrigo Lopez.

Both times, he was stranded by everyone's favorite recently retired villain.

  8. Neil L. Says:

Thanks, JA. Not as uncommon as I would have thought. But Andy's got it right..... Ortiz and Gonzalez??? An unlikely duo.

  9. Thomas Says:

I'm at work and didn't watch, but I'm checking the box score...

Did Sam Fuld really pass up a cycle by getting a double when his team was up 14-4 in the 9th inning?

  10. Thomas Says:

I guess I should have mentioned that he only needed a single at the time (I think) and went for and got a double.

  11. bluejaysstatsgeek Says:

Neither triple is showing up in the video highlights of the game.

  12. Dave Says:

Don't worry about the Red Sox.
Yeah they have given up 10+ runs twice in the first 10 games but the last time they did that was in 2004 and they won the title that year.

  13. Neil L. Says:

    @10
Thomas, if he had a chance to complete the cycle by getting a single would it be inconsiderate of his team to loaf a double into a single? Or does the score at the time matter?

  14. JohnnyChance Says:

This now means that the only player to have a triple in every season from 2000 to 2011(so far) is David Ortiz. There are a few people (Jimmy Rollins, Carlos Guillen, Vlad, J.D. Drew, Johnny Damon, Alex Cora, Beltran, Abreu) who are likely to triple this year and join Papi.

  15. Nash Bruce Says:

    PED's. Test 'em.

  16. Mike Felber Says:

Now that is a truly odd chance occurrence, Mr. Chance.

  17. Sean Says:

They showed the 2 triples on a split screen on MLB Network-------so you could just see them running the bases. Hilarious. I wanna see Adam Dunn VS Jim Thome next!

  18. Sean Says:

    @ #2...

Oy. Matsuzaka has 1 more year after this one on that contract. What's the bigger waste of $$ for Boston---------the money you spent on him if you do not start him... OR the game checks you spent on everyone else when you DO start him?

I think it's 'B'. He just flushes a game all by himself. Is there a worse pitcher in MLB? Ability/ results aside, he's impossible to watch--------even for folks who want him to get beat up. I had the game on XM radio 177 driving home from work last night---------and it was hard to LISTEN TO!

It's like watching someone for hours with the dry heaves who doesn't ever actually have anything come up. Just a constant gagging with the mouth closed...

They need to take him for a drive out into the woods and return with 1 less passenger.

  19. Larry R. Says:

    @9,13

SC this morning had Joe Maddon mouthing "Stop" to Fuld on his 2nd double. A little surprising that the manager is encouraging a player of his to not hustle, whatever the situation.

  20. John Says:

@18: Wow, Sean. That was the best description of a Daisuke start I've ever heard. You made me feel like I was there...

... which, incidentally, irritates me, since I don't want to feel like I'm there. But still...

  21. Lawrence Azrin Says:

I remember back in the mid-80s of a similar occurance of two Red Sox players unlikely to hit triples hitting them back-to-back, I think it was Don Baylor and Tony Armas.

I think it's time for the obligatory local reference to "panicking Red Sox fans lining up to jump off the Tobin Bridge".

  22. Frank Clingenpeel Says:

Yep... just felt the ground below me, and H-ll is indeed freesing over.

  23. Mike Says:

When the Red Sox signed Dice-K I thought he was the real life Sidd Finch. As it turns out he is the fictitous Sidd Finch, just an April Fools Day prank!

  24. Peter Says:

I didn't see agonz' triple, but i did see ortiz'. Upton misplayed the ball. he tried to jump for it, but missed. the ball rolled, but not that far. had upton played it off the wall instead of trying to make the play, ortiz would've been held to a double (or thrown out at third - he was trucking the whole time).

@3 - who cares about exactly 1 triple - he has now tripled in 12 straight seasons, including 1 year with less than 400 pa.
