Anybody else realize that 5 different guys with the surname Carpenter have played MLB this year?

Drew Carpenter
Chris Carpenter
Christopher Carpenter
David Carpenter
Matt Carpenter

All pitchers, except Matt.

  1. Charles Says:

The record for doing both is 34 innings in 1875 by Hugh O' Neill

The most recent 20 game winner with less than 30 SO's and 30 BB's was Slim Sallee in 1919. The other 3 were in the 1870's.

Sallee had 20 BB, 24 SO, 21 Wins in 29 Games with 227.2 innings

    But there are 10 Rodriguezes...

Alex, Fernando, Francisco (Murillo), Francisco (Jose), Henry, Ivan, Josh, Luis, Sean and Wandy.

  3. Skeeb Wilcox Says:

Fairmont, WV's own David Carpenter. Possibly the highlight, along with Hunter Pence, of the Astros' dismal 2011...

  4. Andy Says:

#2, the difference is this. In MLB history there have been 11 Carpenters, with 5 playing this season, while there have been 39 Rodriguezes. On a percentage basis, that's a lot more Carpenters appearing this year.

  5. charles Says:

How about 4 Robinsons, 3 Williams in the HOF and none this year.

About David Carpenter - off to a great start. Second game came on with the bases loaded and two outs. The batter grouded out on the 2nd pitch. 1 hit in 14 AB..

  6. topper009 Says:

Do Jesus Flores and Jesus Guzman also count as carpenters?

  7. ctorg Says:

Thayer has only allowed 1 walk in 19.2 major league innings so far (spread across 3 years). He's allowed 4 homers, though. Guess he throws it down the middle of the plate.

  8. Rich Says:

@4 There's only been three Vukovichs and they all played late 70s, early 80s. Two of them on the same team!

  9. Brian Says:

Matt Carpenter is not a pitcher. Still a cool fact about the (non-singing) Carpenters though...

  10. Marc Says:

    10 Gonzalez's...plus FREDI.

  11. Mike Says:

    Andy,

I have a request. Randy Choate is having a remarkable season, 1.33 ERA, 26 Ks in 20.1 innings. But it's his appearances to innings ratio is what caught my eye, 45 apprearances and just 20.1 innings, less than 1/2 inning per game. We've seen this before. As a Red Sox fan I remember Mike Myers and Tony Fossas (who pitched until he was 73 I think!) doing this as well. I wondered how many times this has been, innings pitched less than 1/2 of appearances. I would bet the list would be almost all lefties. I would think you might want to limit the list to a minimum of 20 appearances.

  12. Andy Says:

Ask and ye shall receive. Pitchers with at least twice as many games as innings pitched, minimum 20 games:

  13. Charles Says:

Career leader in games greater than innings is Mike Stanton. I saw his only career start in 1999. 4 innings of shutout ball. The Yankees needed a spot starter. They decided to use Stanton rather than call up a player from AAA.

    40 players have IP 100.

Current player Mike Gonzalez leads with an ERA+ of 142

  14. Charles Says:

    Correction of the 40 players with G>IP an IP> 300, 33 have an ERA+ > 100

  15. Kahuna Tuna Says:

Box score of 5/25/11 game in which six Marlins pitchers had no walks or strikeouts. No other team so far this season has had a game with more than four 0-BB, 0-K pitcher performances.

  16. Neil L. Says:

    @11
Mike, amazing that Randy Choate has faced only one batter in 28 of his 45 appearances. He is the ultimate LOOGY right now. And as you anticipated, not a righty in sight on Andy's list.

However, Choate's ERA+ has to be taken with a grain of salt doesn't it, because his appearances are hand-picked for him to be successful. The same for the other high ERA+ plitchers on the list.

I have mixed feelings about the statistics of a specialist pitcher like Choate. On the one hand he is effective as used, but is a roster spot really justified for such a limited hurler?

  17. jay Says:

@2, 4, and 8. There have been 13 players named May in MLB history. Six of them (Carlos, Dave, Jerry, Lee, Milt, and Rudy) played from 1970-1973. Also, John Mayberry, Sr. and Willie Mays were active during that period. Lee Maye played until 1971.
