Grand Granderson

Posted by Andy on January 21, 2008

Last year, Curtis Granderson managed 338 total bases with "just" 23 homers.

To give you an idea of the context, here are all the players in 2007 to get at least 320 total bases:

A lot of these players got so many TB on the strength of a lot of homers. Rollins was helped by lots of triples. But Granderson's got the fewest homers of all, despite having the 8th-most total bases.
In history, here are all the seasons even more lopsided than Granderson's. So these are seasons with at least 338 total bases an no more than 23 homers.

So it's pretty darn rare, happening just 4 times since 1946 (although oddly twice in 1977.) Five guys (Musial, Medwick, Cuyler, Sisler, and Delahanty) did it twice apiece. I have to say I would not be shocked if Granderson did it again before his career is over. I also wouldn't be surprised if he wins an MVP or two.

Here's the short list of 20+ HR & 3B since 1871. If we change it to 22+ Granderson becomes only the second player ever to achieve this, and the first since 1899.

    Something to consider.
Since 1945 there have been 10 players who had 15 or more triples at the age of 26.
    http://www.bb-ref.com/pi/shareit/JEag
All of the previous 9 had significant drop-offs in the next year and pretty much for the rest of their careers.

Given that fact and the fact that home runs still tend to increase some after 26, I don't think that Granderson is as likely to make this list again as it would appear.

Here's a connection between your star from yesterday and today.
In 1954 baseball made the sacrifice fly a permanent stat.
Since that time only 1 player, Adam Dunn in 2004, has had at least 80 extra base hits in a season without a SF. Granderson had only 2 last year tying him for fifth on that list.
