Rolling Down The Rhodes

Posted by Steve Lombardi on June 28, 2010

I noticed this news yesterday -

With his scoreless seventh inning Saturday night against the Indians, Reds left-hander Arthur Rhodes continued a dominating scoreless streak of 33 straight appearances and 30 innings.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, Rhodes’ 33-appearance scoreless streak tied the Major-League record shared by Mark Guthrie and Mike Myers. His 30-inning scoreless streak is the longest by a reliever in the Major Leagues this season and the longest by a Reds reliever since Ted Abernathy threw 30.0 consecutive scoreless innings in 1967.

And, the first thing I thought of - seeing Rhodes, Guthrie and Myers - was "Yeah, it's easy to pull this off as a LOOGY - facing one or two batters a game. But, how about guys who face three or more batters a game?" And, thanks to Play Index, we have the answer. Here's the "PI data available" streaks for most games in a row facing 3+ batters and not allowing any runs:

Dig Billy Wagner and Todd Jones for having 3 streaks of 16+ such games here - albeit that they each had one streak over two seasons.  Now, those two guys had more than one run where they were really on a roll...

  1. Frank Clingenpeel Says:

It's interesting to see a whipping boy from another recent post -- Jonathan Broxton -- has made this list; and {not surprisingly} that Billy Wagner has made it three times in the first fifteen.

  2. jakajaka Says:

Rhodes has only faced 1 batter three times during this streak and only faced two batters five times, which means that in 25 appearances he's faced at least 3 batters without giving up a run, which is good for 2nd on this list.

  3. Raphy Says:

Ryan Dempster's (#16) streak was much more impressive than your list shows. He actually went 30 straight appearances of 3+ batters without allowing a run. The only thing preventing him from topping your list was a scoreless third of an inning to finish a game.

Here are the longest scoreless streaks considering only appearances of 3+ batters. Starts or appearances of less than 3 batters (scoreless or not) are not considered:

  4. dukeofflatbush Says:

Rhodes has a very interesting career. With no particular trend or reason, he either stinks or is phenomenal.
    Out of 19 seasons:
His 8 best seasons; 474 IP, 2.41 ERA
His 8 worst seasons; 456.1 IP, 5.80 ERA
    I can't explain that one.

  5. flyingelbowsmash Says:

Us Mariner fans know about that. . .

  6. Orioles_Fan_1983 Says:

Still can't forget his phenominal 1997 season with the wire-to-wire (then bust) Orioles.

  7. Thomas Says:

Valverde's numbers aren't correct. In one appearance he only recorded 2 outs, but gave up a hit, so therefore faced the minimum of 3 batters. I'm sure there are others, but he's the highest on the list..
