So, A-Rod has now done this as many times as Steve Finley? O.K., kidding aside, congrats to Rodriguez this evening for becoming the 16th player to do this 4+ times since 1920.

Over 1100 PA, over 800 HR and only 2 hbp?

  2. Ron Says:

George Brett should be on the list. He did it 3 times, although one was in the playoffs.

  3. Hardcase Says:

This list is for regular season only, Ron.

  4. TheGoof Says:

Bill, check out the career HBP numbers and HR/HBP ratios of Mickey Mantle and Ruben Sierra!

  5. TheGoof Says:

The Babe did it as many times in the playoffs as regular season. Now THAT'S stepping it up. And when you consider one of his two regular season trios came at the end, it means he had more postseason instances than regular until the very end.

Wouldn't it be fun to have a PI radio button choice that would allow combined regular season/post-season searches?

Do we really need another great Yankees accomplishment or great A-Rod accomplishment post here? Personally, I feel that a topic much more interesting than this would be how many 1-hitters there have been in which the one hit is by the opposing team's pitcher. Yes, I know that this was inspired by a great Mets accomplishment in the past couple of days, but Cole Hamels didn't do too badly, either on the hill or at the plate, in that game, too.

#5, there was no such thing as "the playoffs" in Ruth's day. Call it the World Series, call it the postseason, but don't call it the playoffs.

  12. BSK Says:

It is interesting that, for a number of these guys, those were the only hits they had in that game. I guess that makes sense, but you would think that the guys who did this several times (3+), most would have managed another hit of one type or another. Go figure.

  13. WanderingWinder Says:

@1 - well, such a huge percentage of the PAs are homers when you're getting 3+ in a game, it's not surprising that there are only a couple of HBP. Keep in mind that these stats are only from the 3-homer games themselves, and as you point out, there are only a few hundred non-HR PAs

Historically, if a player hits three or more home runs in a game, that player's team wins the game more than 80% of the time. Johnny Mize's teams' record in his three-homer games was 1-4-1.
