Losing 1-Zip On The Road In Non-Extras

Posted by Steve Lombardi on August 15, 2010

According to my quick calculations, today's 1-0 loss to the Royals was the first time in the last 8 years and 3 months (thereabouts) that the Yankees lost a non-extra innings game on the road by that score.  How many other teams, since 2002 through yesterday, have lost 1-0 games on the road in non-extras?

Here's the list: From 2002 to 2010, Only 9-inning games, Team Lost, On the Road, Requiring R=1, sorted by greatest number of games in a single season matching the selected criteria

Using this data, one could say that "it" happens about 18 times a year - since '02. But, not to the Yankees...at least in a while.

So is it correct to say that, until today, it had happened to every other major league team since the last time it happened to the Yankees?

  2. BSK Says:

A cursory glance indicates that NL teams are overrepresented on this list, which would make sense with the lack of DH and general talent disparity recently between the two leagues. I'm sure that worked in the Yanks favor. That and the $200 million payroll... :-p

  3. DoubleDiamond Says:

@1 - Yes, unfortunately, another example of bad things not happening to the Yankees very often. No other team even had it happen just once. The two teams that only had it happen twice are the Cubs and Tigers.

My computer is extra slow tonight (almost as old as the last time this happened to the Yankees, with hard drive almost filled to capacity), so I couldn't check some things I wanted to check. All of the games from 2010 involved 8 offensive innings by the home team. The criteria here is non-extras. Were any of the games included above won via walk-off in the bottom of the ninth?

  4. Gerry Says:

@3, thanks, but it seems to me that it happened only once to the Rangers.

  5. Steve Lombardi Says:

It's happened to both the Reds and Dodgers 3 times, each, already this season. I wonder of one, or both, will make it four times before the year is over? It hasn't happened to anyone 4 x in a yr. since 2002.

  6. Basmati Says:

Looks like Detroit now own the longest streak at 6 years.
